Faculty Positions at the China Institute for Socio-Legal Studies (CISLS), Shanghai Jiao Tong University
China Institute for Socio-Legal Studies (CISLS), affiliated with KoGuan School of Law, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is a university-level interdisciplinary research institution. It serves the dual purpose of an advanced academic institution in the field of social sciences and a non-government think tank. The predecessor of CISLS, Law and Society Center (LSC) at KoGuan School of Law, was established in 2009. Over the past decade, LSC has made remarkable achievements, such as founding China’s first socio-legal studies association in Shanghai under the guidance of the China Law Society, launching the Asian Journal of Law and Society, Asia’s first English journal of socio-legal research, in collaboration with the Cambridge University Press, publishing multiple book series on socio-legal studies, hosting three national annual conferences on socio-legal studies in China, and organizing international symposia, to name a few. In April 2019, Shanghai Jiao Tong University founded the CISLS, with its mission to explore the underlying mechanisms of evolution in orders and regulations in China, to investigate the governance of mega-scale society, network-based society, risk society and data-driven society using empirical methods and cognitive science, and to facilitate an appropriate recognition, comprehension and interpretation of the issues encountered by China and propose objective and reliable solutions to universal problems in the world.
In order to further enhance the research and advising capacities of the Institute, we sincerely invite talents from all around the world to join us. The faculty positions would suit scholars with a background in the following fields: socio-legal studies, empirical legal research, social network analysis, computational law, law and game theory, law and artificial intelligence, cognitive science and judicial behavior, legal consciousness and legal culture, and the social history of law.
- Positions and Recruiting Criteria
1.1 Chair Professor
(1) The applicant should have full professorship at a prestigious university in China or abroad;
(2) The applicant should have superb academic expertise, have achieved groundbreaking academic achievements in relevant fields, and enjoy a high academic prestige and influence among peer scholars at both domestic and international levels;
(3) The applicant should have the capacity and experience to teach courses at the undergraduate level and core courses at the graduate level;
(4) The applicant should abide the law and have high personal integrity, good work ethics and teamwork spirit.
1.2 Distinguished Professor
(1) The applicant should have tenured professorship at a prestigious university in China or abroad;
(2) The applicant should have made important research achievements in relevant fields and played an important role in impactful academic research, decision-making consultation or social service work. The applicant is expected to have the ability to lead the discipline to meet world-class standards in the cutting-edge areas;
(3) The applicant should have the capacity and experience to teach courses at the undergraduate level and core courses at the graduate level;
(4) The applicant should abide the law and have high personal integrity, good work ethics and teamwork spirit.
1.3 Tenured Professor
(1) The applicant should serve as a full professor, researcher or tenured associate professor at a prestigious university in China or abroad;
(2) The applicant should have made important research achievements in relevant fields, hold academic recognition from peers and enjoy scholarly impact;
(3) The applicant should have the capacity and experience to teach courses at the undergraduate level and core courses at the graduate level;
(4) The applicant should abide the law and have high personal integrity, good work ethics and teamwork spirit.
1.4 Tenured Associate Professor
(1) The applicant should serve as an assistant professor or an assistant researcher at a prestigious university in China or abroad;
(2) The applicant should have made important research achievements in relevant fields, hold academic recognition from peers and enjoy scholarly impact;
(3) The applicant should have the capacity and experience to teach courses at the undergraduate level and core courses at the graduate level;
(4) The applicant should abide the law and have high personal integrity, good work ethics and teamwork spirit.
Applicants with excellent credentials may not be restricted to all the requirements above.
- The faculty positions are employed as staff of a government-affiliated institution.
- Job Description and Responsibilities
3.1 To engage in academic research in relevant fields, to preside over or participated in various research projects, and to publish high-quality academic articles;
3.2 To actively participate in student training, to complete the teaching tasks assigned by the institute and the university, and to supervise and mentor graduate students;
3.3 To organize and participate in the construction of research development plans in relevant fields and to actively participate in the public affairs of the institute.
- Remuneration
Remuneration package will be based on internationally competitive standard and individual performance, including salary, start-up research grant, housing and other welfare subsidies, and first-rate office conditions and administrative support.
