An appeal on behalf of lawyer Tang Jitian

We, the undersigned concerned scholars and legal professionals, are writing on behalf of lawyer Tang Jitian, who is desperately trying to travel to Japan to see his daughter, critically ill with tuberculosis and hospitalized in an ICU.

As a prominent human rights lawyer, Tang has been stripped of his license to practice law and unlawfully banned from leaving China since 2010. According to Article 13(2) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.” Yet like many other human rights defenders, including, since January this year, Guo Feixiong (aka Yang Maodong), Tang has been told that his leaving the country would endanger national security in ways never specified by the authorities.

We call on the Chinese government to allow Tang to go to Japan to assist his daughter on humanitarian grounds and to respect its human rights obligations.
